Gooseberry Barn

“A beautiful, beautiful cottage. Will highly recommend...” "Gooseberry Barn was far more than we could have wished for ...”

At the gateway to the Peak District, Gooseberry Barn (often called 'Pheasant Barn' due to the frequent visits of a cock and his hen pheasants in the rear courtyard) is a fabulous, single storey, 2 bedroomed, 2 bathroomed self catering cottage. Gooseberry Barn is finished to a very high standard and retains many of the original features, including king post trusses and exposed stonework. The Barn benefits from being all on one level, with underfloor heating throughout.

The lounge has a Clearview wood burning stove, oak shutters and large picture window which looks out onto the cobbled courtyard. The double aspect dining kitchen has painted units with quartz work surfaces, electric hob and oven, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washer and microwave. The dining table by the window seats four.

There are two excellent double en-suite bedrooms. The first has a king-size bed and bathroom with bath with shower over, wash basin and toilet. The second has two single beds and bathroom, with walk-in shower, hand basin and toilet. The lounge and both bedrooms have flat TV's. Two of the TVs have Freeview. The barn also benefits from its own wireless internet access. Fabrics, furnishings and fittings have been carefully co-ordinated throughout, with limestone-effect solid floors and occasional rugs.

Gooseberry Barn has its own private courtyard at the front with table and chairs and southerly aspect. If you prefer, take a short walk to your own separate seating area where you can enjoy the views of the surrounding countryside. Alternatively, take a walk in the 30 acres of the estate and enjoy watching the birds and the wildlife generally.

There is private parking for two cars as well as storage for cycles. Country walks are on your doorstep, straight from the barn.

NB: Suitability for anyone with a mobility issue:

Please note:  our accommodation is on one level with open plan kitchen/dining leading through an open vestibule to the lounge/sitting area.  In occupying either of the bedrooms, in the event of a fire in either the kitchen or the lounge, other than through the emergency exit windows in both bedrooms, guests would have to exit through either the lounge or the kitchen.  Whilst from the single bedded bedroom (the one with shower room) there is the reasonable option of exiting through either through the kitchen or the lounge exit doors, in the event of a fire in lounge, those occupying the king bedded room would be reliant on the emergency windows in their bedroom.  As such this room would not be suitable for use by people with mobility issues.

Location of Gooseberry Barn

Gooseberry Barn self catering cottage is on the outskirts of the small Derbyshire village of Holmesfield with its historic church and several pubs serving good food all within circa. 1 mile. This barn is ideally placed at the gateway to the Peak District National Park, with the historic country houses of Chatsworth and Haddon Hall and their parklands only a short drive away. It is also within easy reach of the market towns of Bakewell and Chesterfield (the latter with its famous crooked spire) plus the delightful village of Baslow. All have a host of excellent shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants (at least one with a Michelin star!)

For lovers of the outdoors, the area has everything from walking to cycling, climbing, fishing, horse-riding, caving and much more! Miles of cycle trails can be explored on foot or bicycle (cycle hire available locally or bring your own).

The White Peak is within easy reach, as are the caves of Castleton (home of the 'Mighty Titan' - the largest cave in the United Kingdom), the cable cars of Matlock, the thrills of Alton towers and the tranquillity and breath-taking scenery surrounding the Derwent Dams where the famous 617 Dambusters' squadron practised the dams' raids (still commemorated with annual fly-past).

Meadowhall, one of the largest shopping centres in the country, is within half an hour drive, as are the theatres and attractions of Sheffield city centre.
